DR walt monthly family update

1. Still in Colorado Springs

Well, the real estate market in Colorado Springs is still ice cold, and we’ve only had 4 showings in four months. We’re in no hurry to sell or leave Colorado, so we’ll just wait for the right buyer to come along. Once we sell, then we’ll be moving to Decatur, GA (in the Atlanta area). In the meantime, the weather here has been fabulous, and Colorado is a great place to be in autumn.

2. Two Potential Book Contracts

Although I’m working on a dozen different writing projects, in the “counting your chickens before they hatch” category, it appears that two may be finding a home with publishers.

My agent, Greg Johnson, the founder and president of WordServe Literary, just notified me that Whitaker House is sending a contract for me to write a devotional: The Nicene Creed: 45-Day Exposition for Faith and Life.

There is also a major publisher considering my proposal for a prayer devotional: Calling Abba: 365 Days to Finding the Closeness to God You Always Wanted.

I’d appreciate your prayers for both of these projects as they represent a new direction in my writing, about which I’m very excited.

3. What the Bible Says About … Volume 2” was released on the YouVersion App

You Version What the Bible Says Volume 2

If you’re looking for a brief, topical, daily Bible reading plan, the six-month plan that I compiled (with the assistance of my daughter, Kate Ritz), “What the Bible Says About … Volume 2,” was released on the YouVersion Bible App a couple of weeks ago. It already has nearly two hundred subscribers from 16 countries.

YouVersion wrote:

Created by Walt Larimore, MD, “What the Bible Says About … Volume 2” is a daily devotional composed solely of Bible verses related to a variety of topics compiled to inspire and encourage every Christ follower for an entire year.

They add:

You’ll find this devotional is unique in several ways:

First, it doesn’t contain one word or thought by a human, but only phrases or verses directly from the Bible. The reason is simple: “For the word of God is living and active” (Heb 4:12), “All Scripture is God-breathed” (2Tim 3:16-17), “These are the true words of God” (Rev 19:9), and “If anyone adds anything to [these words of prophecy], God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll” (Rev 22:18). You would be appropriately cautious of any author who picks and chooses verses out of context and re-packages them. But we hope you’ll find that this particular effort is righteous and will allow God to speak to you in a new way with His truths.

Second, there are no chapter and verse numbers. These were not original to Scripture and can sometimes get in the way of God’s Spirit speaking to and teaching us. Nevertheless, when people first come across the Bible without book, chapter, and verse, they rightfully wonder if the verses have been changed. Therefore, Dr. Larimore has put the book, chapter, and verse references at the bottom of each devotion.

Third, often devotionals reflect this or that theological leaning. You won’t find that here either. What Dr. Larimore labored to do for you, over the last two decades, is gather significant verses to accurately reflect the whole counsel of God’s word. His guide was this: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Tim 2:15).

Last, but not least, let us encourage you to not just read or listen to these devotionals—rather, allow it to infuse your spirit, heart, and soul—to change you from the inside out. Our prayer is that God will use His word to bear His fruit in and through you.

Volume 1 of “What the Bible Says About … Volume 1” has been available for free on the YouVersion app since March 2024 and has had nearly 8,000 subscribers on three continents who have rated it a 5.0 out of 5.0 over the last couple of months. You can learn more about VOLUME 1 or sign up for it here.

4. At First Light was awarded an international gold medal

My and Mike Yorkey’s book, At First Light: A True World War II Story of a Hero, His Bravery, and an Amazing Horse, was awarded the Gold Medal in the Non-Fiction Biography category of the Readers’ Favorite Book Reviews’ 2025 International Book Awards. Here’s their Press Release:

Readers’ Favorite is proud to announce that At First Light by Walt Larimore and Mike Yorkey won the Gold Medal in the Non-Fiction Biography category in its annual 2025 international book award contest. The book is currently on Amazon.com here.

The Readers’ Favorite International Book Award Contest featured thousands of contestants from over a dozen countries, ranging from new independent authors to NYT best-sellers such as J.A. Jance, James Rollins, Daniel Silva, as well as celebrity authors like Jim Carrey (Bruce Almighty), Henry Winkler (Happy Days), and Eriq La Salle (E.R., Coming to America).

Readers’ Favorite is one of the largest book review and award contest sites on the Internet. They have earned the respect of renowned publishers like Random House, Simon & Schuster, and Harper Collins, and have received the “Best Websites for Authors” and “Honoring Excellence” awards from the Association of Independent Authors. They are also fully accredited by the BBB (A+ rating), which is a rarity among Book Review and Book Award Contest companies.

Here’s the 5-Star Review on which the award was based:

At First Light by Walt Larimore and Mike Yorkey is the biography of Phil Larimore, who was raised in Memphis during the 1930s and mastered navigation, survival, and horseback riding from a young age. Having trouble academically, he was sent to a military school, which set him on a path to enlist after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Just before turning eighteen, he became the youngest graduate of Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. In early 1944, he led a platoon delivering ammunition under fire in Europe’s combat zones, fighting through Italy, France, and Germany. Promoted at twenty, he became the youngest company commander, earning almost every major valor award.

At First Light tells the remarkable true story of a young officer whose life in World War II reads like a script pulled from forgotten archives of American bravery. From battlefield leadership to a post-war mission few could imagine, Phil Larimore’s journey is filled with moments that speak of grit, duty, and heart.

The authors bring the past to life with a clear sense of place and time, balancing historical accuracy with storytelling that moves with purpose.

The book doesn’t just recount events, it honors them, reminding readers of the cost of freedom and the character of those who fought to defend it.

This isn’t just a war story; it’s a story about what it means to lead, to serve, and to carry a legacy worth remembering.

A truly unforgettable read.

7. Last Month’s Happenings

  • Aug 28-Sep 2, Barb and I had a delightful time in Decatur, GA, visiting Scott, Jen, and the grands for the Labor Day holiday.
  • Sep 2-5, we drove from Atlanta to Pensacola Beach. I am married to a “beach girl,” and we had a terrific time, including visiting with Barb’s brother Greg and his wife Jackie, as well as enjoying the beach and wonderful seafood. We’ve spent time at this beach almost every year for the last six decades.
  • Sep 5-9, we drove to Baton Rouge to spend time with Barb’s sister, Sue, and other family and friends. Of course, the food and fellowship was great there, also.

8. Upcoming events

  • We’re at home this month. I’ll be working on several writing projects.
  • However, October 28 we’ll head back to Decatur to spend time with Scott, Jen, and the grands.
