Hundreds of thousands of American deaths and hospitalizations prevented by COVID vaccines

COVID-19 vaccines likely saved almost 280,000 American lives and prevented more than one million hospitalizations according to a new study.

CNN reports that COVID “vaccines saved hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented more than a million hospitalizations in the United States” based upon estimates from researchers at Yale University and the Commonwealth Fund.

For the study, “researchers compared actual trends in [COVID] cases, hospitalizations, and deaths against a modeled trajectory of what those trends would have been if there had been no vaccinations.”

They concluded that by June’s end, “there would have been about 279,000 additional deaths due to [COVID] – about 46% more than there were – and as many as 1.25 million additional hospitalizations if there were no vaccinations.”

The researchers also said, “The vaccination campaign markedly curbed the U.S. pandemic. If there had been no vaccination program, daily deaths from COVID-19 potentially would have jumped to nearly 4,500 deaths per day during a second ‘2021 spring surge’ — eclipsing the observed daily peak of 4,000 during the first 2021 winter surge.”

Here’s the study conclusion:

Our results demonstrate the extraordinary impact of rapidly vaccinating a large share of the population to prevent hospitalizations and deaths.

The speed of vaccination seems to have prevented another potential wave of the U.S. pandemic in April that might otherwise have been triggered by the Alpha and Gamma variants.

Additional new variants such as Delta will pose a special threat to unvaccinated populations in coming months.

A renewed commitment to expanding vaccine access will be crucial to achieving higher levels of vaccination necessary to control of the pandemic and prevent avoidable suffering, particularly for those in historically underserved groups and areas of the U.S. with low vaccination rates.

Initial critics of the COVID vaccines predicted “mRNA vaccines for coronavirus could halve the population in five years by killing most people who receive them”  due to “antibody-dependent enhancement.” All of the current evidence, fortunately, demonstrates the exact opposite.
