A New Devotional Series — The Intentional Life Part 1 – Organize Your Life – 10 Days to Peace, Purpose, and Priority
May 9, 2026Phil and his guide walked up to the washroom and watched as two beautiful gray horses were splashed down with suds and their hooves cleaned. Phil noticed their traditional military look: clipped manes and forelocks and squared tails.[1]

“How long do the horses serve here?” he asked.
“About ten years on average, then we usually adopt them out to the public. The Caisson Horse Adoption Program ensures that each horse is rewarded with a great home following a well-earned retirement.”
Phil took in the musty stable smells, which he loved. “Sounds like you guys have long days,” he commented.
“We do, Sir. We usually begin our day at zero-four-hundred hours when we report to the stables. There’s a ton to do before zero-eight-hundred when the first two caissons have to be ready to go.
“When the caisson squads are in the cemetery, the guys left behind clean the barn stalls and feed pails and shine the tack and the brass. We work steadily until about fifteen hundred hours.”
“Quite an operation,” Phil observed.
The soldier paused a moment. “Yes, sir, it is. But it’s more than just an assignment or job. It’s a pleasure and honor to serve our country’s heroes and their families.
“We consider it part of our sacred trust that each funeral is executed with the utmost dignity and respect. We have the privilege of carrying a comrade for their last ride to Arlington National Cemetery.
“My sense is not only that the families appreciate it, but we create a lifelong memory and bring some peace and closure to them.”
Phil glanced at his watch. “I have an appointment with Colonel McGarr in a few minutes. Served with him from Anzio until the end of the war in Germany.”
The man’s eyes widened. He stood straight and saluted. “Thank you for your service and sacrifice, Sir.”
Phil returned the salute. “Thank you, and I’m looking forward to working with you.”[2]
