January 7, 2025I enjoy penning a bi-monthly column for the readers of Today’s Christian Living magazine. My column, “Ask Dr. Walt“ in the November 2024 issue is on page 13. Here is the link to the issue. The Q&A about penicillin allergy is below.
What works best for toenail fungal infections?
QUESTION: What is the most effective therapy for fungal infections of my big toes?
ANSWER: If you search the internet, you’ll find countless hacks and remedies that claim to heal fingernail or toenail fungal infections, or what doctors call onychomycosis.
Based on studies of effectiveness, safety, and cost, I recommend a regimen of terbinafine, (generic Lamasil) 250 mg once daily for 12 weeks, followed by a 12-week period of no therapy, and then a 4-week booster of terbinafine, 250 mg a day, as it has the highest rate of cure one year after treatment.
In our area, the cost is less than $15 for the entire treatment.
Just remember that the medication kills the fungus in the nail bed, and then the new, fungal-free nail, has to grow out and this can take 9-12 months.
