November 11, 20247) Conclusion: Six Questions to Review with Your Family Physician and More Resources for Your Health
November 13, 2024Here are some more of my Dad’s favorite quotes about the Infantrymen he served with and loved (as well as one about horses he rode and another about Christmas) that I used in my book, At First Light.
These are all cited in At First Light, from Chapters 49-54.
“American soldiers…share a bond of pride, of courage, of sacrifice forged on the battlefields of Europe…. They fought to free us from the darkest of tyrannies and restore a sense of hope to the world.” — National World War II Museum in New Orleans[1]
“Only the dead have seen the end of war.” — George Santayana, influential American thinker in the early 20th century[2]
“My horse’s feet are as swift as rolling thunder; he carries me away from all my fears. And when the world threatens to fall asunder, his mane is there to wipe away my tears.” — Bonnie Lewis, author of Riding a Dead Horse[3]
“A man on a horse is spiritually, as well as physically, bigger than a man on foot.” — John Steinbeck, author ofThe Grapes of Wrath[4]
“My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?” — Bob Hope, famous comedian and Hollywood actor[5]
“The war now is away back in the past, and you can tell what books cannot. When you talk, you come down to the practical realities just as they happened…. There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but boys, it is all hell. You can be the warning voice to generations yet to come. I look upon war with horror.” — Union Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman[6]
“These are the caisson horses, who quietly play an important role in the U.S. military by honoring its service members.” — 1st Lieutenant Austin Hatch, public affairs officer for the 3rd Infantry Regiment caisson platoon[7]
