October 7, 2024In early October, General Truscott [commanding general, VI Corps] made a surprise visit to the 30th Infantry command post north of Bruyères to visit General O’Daniel [commanding general, 3rd Infantry Division] and Colonel McGarr [commander, 30th Infantry Regiment]. The Army brass called Phil into a meeting to discuss the idea of using mules again.
Based upon Phil’s innovative experiences with mules during the Battle of Anzio, General Truscott wanted Phil’s opinion.
The 1st lieutenant enthusiastically recommended bringing in mules to the Vosges Mountains, as well as experienced mule skinners and a veterinarian or two to treat any injuries or illnesses.
Phil assured his commanders that he and his men could oversee a program using the mules to haul rations and munitions to infantry units by night.
Although providing forage for the animals could be a problem, Phil reported that the mules showed no signs of anxiety or skittishness when exposed to German artillery in Italy.
The mules were also almost miraculously adept at sensing mines and booby traps, even in the dark, while carrying supplies in the most challenging terrain. Phil said he did not doubt that mules would have been useful during the earlier part of the Vosges campaign.
General Truscott stood.
Before Phil could salute, the general extended his hand and said, “I appreciate your recommendation, Lieutenant. General
O’Daniel tells me you’re a fighting man. A good man.”
Then, nodding at O’Daniel, he added, “We’re all equestrians at heart here. You, Iron Mike, and me. But I’m glad for your example using mules back on Anzio. Brilliant. And I believe it will make a difference here.”
Phil saluted and left.
Following their meeting, General Truscott requisitioned 300 mules from Italy and a veterinary detachment.
Since they would not arrive until November, he approved Phil acquiring a barren of mules from local farmers.
