Talking to Your Kids at Home about Sex
GUEST INTERVIEW
Lori Kuykendall, MPH
TEASE:
Researchers tell us that our children are being exposed to sexual content at younger ages that ever before. In fact, it’s almost impossible to protect them. Sex is delivered 24/7 via the internet. How in the world can parents protect their children from false and alluring sexual images and teach them God’s divine design for sex? We’ll consider this on today’s edition of Ask Dr. Walt.
OPEN:
Hi, everyone. I’m family physician Dr. Walt Larimore. Thanks for joining me for what I hope will be a very helpful program. But due to the sensitive nature of this program, you might want to not watch it with younger children.
I want to introduce you Lori Kuykendall, MPH, who is the president and CEO of Medical Institute of Sexual Health.
- Lori, welcome to “Ask Dr. Walt.”
- So, what is Medical Institute for Sexual Health. When was the organization founded and what’s your purpose?
- How’d you come to be part of Medical Institute?
- It seems to me, that these days, waiting until your child is an adolescent is just too late. Our kids are inundated with sexual information and misinformation at increasingly younger ages. How dangerous is this early exposure to sex to our kids?
- What do you recommend to parents? When should they start talking to their kids and how should they do it?
- How does “begin as you want to go on” apply to teaching and talking to your children about sex?
- I’ve often said to my kids and patients, “The most critical sex organ is the brain.” Would you agree?
- What can the parents of young children do to help protect them in today’s sex-saturated culture?
- How can you encourage parents who are worried about talking to their children because of their past choices?
- How can parents talk to their young children about sexual abuse?
- Lori, I’m excited about Medical Institute’s newest project. You all call it, “K-12 Standards for Optimal Sexual Development.” We don’t have time to dive into these new standards today, but can you give us a thumbnail sketch and then we can talk about them next time?
- How can people reach Medical Institute for Sexual Health/
SAY GOOD-BYE TO LORI:
Before we close the show, I want to tell you about three books I’ve written to help faith-based parents introduce their children to information that is medically accurate and Biblically sound about their young, growing, and changing bodies.
The first, Lintball Leo’s Not-So-Stupid Questions About Your Body is for boys age 9-10. Second, for boys over age 10, there’s The Ultimate Guys’ Body Book: Not-so-stupid questions about your body and third, for girls 10 or over, there’s The Ultimate Girls’ Body Book: Not-so-silly questions about your body. I also have two books to help parents raise children who are health physically, emotionally, relationally, and spirituality: God’s Design for the Highly Healthy Child and God’s Design for the Highly Healthy Teen.
You can find all my books at DrWalt.com, just click on the “books” tab. Also, at DrWalt.com you can sign up for my daily “Medical News You Can Use” blog and my twice daily Biblical devotion, “Morning Glory, Evening Grace.” And, if you have comments or questions drop me a line at DrWalt@Liftable.TV. That’s DrWalt@Liftable.TV.
So, until our next visit, “Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.” I’m Dr. Walt Larimore and I look forward to seeing you for my next episode of “Ask Dr. Walt.”
