Hi, everyone. I’m family physician, Dr. Walt Larimore, with an Apple a Day.

New research reveals that eating processed or red meats can increase your risk of heart disease, one of the leading causes of death and disability.

The risk was highest with processed meats such as bacon, ham, or sausage. Still a high risk, but not as high were beef, lamb, and pork.

The good news for carnivores is that there was no apparent risk with eating poultry, such as chicken and turkey.

Considered lean meats, most types of poultry do not contain the levels of saturated fat as found in red meat, nor the high levels of sodium that are part of processed meats, both of which are not good for your health.

The bottom line?

Processed meats are the worst for your heart health while poultry is not.

The study was published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition.
