Hi, everyone. I’m family physician, Dr. Walt Larimore, with an Apple a Day.
A new study shows that adults who follow the Nordic diet have greater odds of living longer with optimal physical and mental function.
The Nordic Diet includes frequent consumption of fruits, root vegetables, whole grains, fish, and water, while limiting the consumption of red meat, dairy, sugars, and processed foods.
This is very similar to the Mediterranean style diet. The main difference is oily fats. While the Mediterranean diet suggests olive oil, the Nordic diet opts for rapeseed oil, which is better known to Americans as canola oil.
Both oils plant-based and contain high amounts of omega-3’s which promote a healthy heart by boosting healthy HDL cholesterol and trimming away the lethal LDL cholesterol.
The new study showed that the Nordic diet resulted in people not only living longer but living with a reduced risk of dementia and an increased likelihood of optimal physical functioning—especially if combined with what the researchers called a “favorable lifestyle,” which included not smoking, having a strong social network, and being physically active.
