The 3rd Infantry Division announces the 2023 class of nine inductees into the Marne Hall of Fame (MHOF).
The MHOF honors Dogface soldiers who served in the division and had a lasting impact on the 3rd ID, the Army and nation. The MHOF program preserves the division’s legacy by paying respect to past heroes and promoting the unit’s remarkable history. Its goal is to connect current soldiers with past Dogface soldiers who have exemplified courage, selfless service, grit, and resilience in the face of adversity. By embracing the past achievements of Dogface soldiers, the MHOF amplifies historical and special events that are integral to the historic division.
Nominees are U.S. military members (officers, warrant officers, noncommissioned officers and soldiers) of 3rd ID who have brought great honor to the division through deed, sacrifice, or achievement.
2023 inductees to the Marne Hall of Fame are:
- Pvt. 1st Class John Barkley
- Cpl. John Essebagger Jr.
- Cpl. Charles Gilliland
- Cpl. Clair Goodblood
- Lt. Gen. George Hays
- Lt. Gen. John Heintges
- Maj. Philip Larimore
- Lt. Gen. Lionel Mc-Garr
- Lt. Gen. John O’Daniel
Additionally, 3rd ID announces the 2023 class of six inductees of the Distinguished Members of the Division. These recipients are U.S. or foreign military members and civilians who served at least one year in the division and achieved great success in their careers. The 2023 inductees to the Distinguished Members of the Division are:
- President Dwight D. Eisenhower
- General of the Army, George C. Marshall
- Gen. Edward Meyer
- Gen. Matthew Ridgway
- Chaplain (Maj. Gen.) Patrick Ryan
- Gen. Frederick Weyand
In November 2021, 3rd ID officials unveiled the inaugural class of honored recipients for both programs. Currently, there are a total of 30 MHOF inductees and 17 Distinguished Members of the Division.

Such a special and well deserved honor for your dad and your family. Congratulations. Sending love from our family to yours.
Diane,
Your kind words are an encouragement and blessing. I hope you get a chance to read the book about him: https://amzn.to/3Lp0MCw.
All the best.

I know how much your father was adored by his family. Seeing this recognition shines another accolade of who your father was, what he did to earn the recognition, and another overwhelming recognition of his leadership, fearless insights in battle, and a special compassion for the safety of the soldiers who were under his command. Thank you for sharing this event. Always a spcial time to once again knowing your father and who he was. A spcial man.
Grace,

Ed,
You support has always meant so much. And your comments today are an inspiration, encouragement, affirmation, and blessing to me, my brothers, and our families.
All the best.

I’ve just finished reading for the second time, your 3 Bryson City stories. What an amazing Dr. you are and the many gripping lessons you’ve learned along the way. I was touched by the sensitivity and spiritual way you shared with your patients. God bless you. Loretta
Loretta,
Your kind words and feedback are an encouragement, affirmation, and blessing. BTW, the Bryson City series continues with two books about my family medicine days in Kissimmee, Florida. Their titles are The Best Medicine: Tales of Humor and Hope from a Small-Town Doctor and The Best Gift: Tales of a Small-Town Doctor Learning Life’s Greatest Lessons.
In addition, I’ve written two historical fiction books about the Bryson City area and the Smoky Mountains (set in the 1920s and 30s) that you might enjoy: Hazel Creek and Sugar Fork.
Last, but not least, is my first venture into a secular WWII book. If you’re interested in WWII, At First Light: A True World War II Story of a Hero, His Bravery, and an Amazing Horse might be of interest. It has some salty language, but a sweet redemptive message.
If you read any of those, do let me know your thoughts. Blessings.
Dr. Walt
