November 19, 2022Is mouth taping, a practice to stop mouth breathing and snoring that has been trending on social media safe?
CNN Health reported, “The social media platform TikTok has helped spread yet another potentially dangerous idea: taping your lips shut to stop mouth breathing at night.”
Some experts are now saying it can be dangerous for many people including those with obstructive sleep apnea.
For example, sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta said individuals with breathing problems should be evaluated by a health professional and consider other, safer remedies for the issue. He adds, “There is limited evidence on the benefits of mouth taping and I would be very careful — and even talk to your health care provider before attempting it.”
CNN Health points out, “None of the TikTok videos CNN viewed mentioned the practice might be harmful in any way.”
Take away? TikTok is probably not your best source for evidence-based health information and medical advice.
