Former smokers adhering to health recommendations reduce premature death

If you are a former smoker or a current smoker who stops, you have automatically dramatically reduced your risk of premature death. But, do you want to reduce it by another 30%?

Medscape reported, “People with a history of smoking who exercise regularly, eat nutritious foods, and maintain a healthy weight can reduce their risk for premature death by almost 30% compared with those who don’t adopt such good habits, researchers have found.”

The researchers found that “former smokers who adhered to health recommendations were as much as 27% less likely to die over the study period than those who didn’t follow the suggestions.”

Furthermore, people who had the highest healthful lifestyle adherence scores had a 24% decreased risk of death from cancer, a 28% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease, and a 30% lower risk of death from respiratory disease.

The findings were published in JAMA Network Open. Read the full Medscape story here.
