Study links lifestyle habits to prostate cancer risks

Do you have a family history of prostate cancer? Here’s some exciting news on how to decrease your cancer risk.

Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles a man’s risk of developing the disease, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

But your lifestyle may actually beat your genes. This new study found that men with a genetic risk of prostate cancer who

  • kept their weight below the obesity cutoff;
  • regularly got vigorous exercise, like jogging;
  • not smoking; and
  • regularly eating fatty fish (like salmon);
  • eating tomato products; and
  • limiting processed meats …

had a 1.6% risk of dying from the disease, compared with a 5.3% risk among those who did not maintain those habits.

That’s a 70% reduction in dying from prostate cancer.

In particular, studies have tied the last three diet habits above to a lower risk of prostate cancer or death from the disease.

However, the investigators said that of all lifestyle habits, exercise seemed most important, followed by maintaining a healthy weight.

What if you only do four of the six lifestyle behaviors?

Researchers said men who maintained at least four to six healthy of lifestyle factors had a 45% lower risk of dying from prostate cancer, compared with those who adhered to few or none of the habits.

In other words, this research suggests that a healthy lifestyle may not decrease your risk of developing prostate cancer, but may decrease your risk of lethal prostate cancer — which is much more important.
