June 15, 2022Oral piercings such as those of the tongue and lips can present significant health risks and complications that most people, especially young people, are not aware of. Potential risks of oral piercings include:
- infection, swelling, and bleeding,
- hypersalivation or excessive drooling,
- nerve damage,
- speech, chewing, and swallowing problems,
- airway obstruction,
- cleft tongue,
- tooth damage,
- gum problems,
- diastema and
- endocarditis.
People who have oral piercings should be counseled on how to minimize problems.
