1) At First Light released on April 19

The WWII book about my father and his unbelievable exploits, At First Light: A True World War II Story of a Hero, His Bravery, and an Amazing Horse, was released on April 19, but my brothers and our families and friends met in Baton Rouge at LSU for the “World Premiere” of the book.

2) Meeting the Governor of Louisiana

While at the “World Premiere” events of At First Light, we attended the Grand Opening of the $14 million dollar renovation of the LSU Military Museum. The governor of Louisiana, John Bel Edwards, who is a West Point graduate, asked to meet us. We had a delightful meeting with him and long-time friends Rodney and Becky Wood (Rod is the chaplain for the Louisiana Legislature). We were privileged to present him with a signed copy of the book.

3) Featured on “Chris Fabry Live” on Moody Radio

On Monday, May 30, which is Memorial Day, I’ll spend an hour with my friend, Chris Fabry, on his national radio program, “Chris Fabry Live” on the Moody Radio Network. We’ll be discussing my book, At First Light. The program will air from 1:00 – 2:00 PM and will be available after the broadcast here.

4) Featured on Dr. Dobson’s “Family Talk” Radio Program

I was honored that Dr. James Dobson recently re-aired a two-part interview that I recorded with him in 2019 titled, “Fit Over 50: Make Simple Choices Today for a Healthier You” based upon the book I co-wrote with my friend, Dr. Phil Bishop.

The broadcasts were on his daily national radio program, “Family Talk.” It’s been one of their more popular broadcasts. You can listen to Part One or Part Two via the links below:

5) At First Light garnering great reviews. Here are a few:

“I love World War II books, and none is better than At First Light. It’s like a combination of Band of Brothers and War Horse—or perhaps a mixture of Unbroken and Seabiscuit. A mesmerizing page-turner not to be missed.”

—Pat Williams, co-founder of the NBA’s Orlando Magic

“This story is extraordinary. An almost forgotten hero: tough combat, tragic sacrifice, a marvelous horse, and an astonishing ending. Don’t miss this remarkable book.”

—Gen. David H. Petraeus, U.S. Army (Ret.) four-star general and former CIA Director

“Phil Larimore was a Dick Winters from the Band of Brothers-type of frontline, small-unit combat leader. At First Light has the makings of a great movie or Ken Burns miniseries.”

—Col. Alexander P. Shine, U.S. Army, Infantry and War College Professor (Ret.)

“One of the most fascinating stories of World War II. Heartwarming true story of a great American hero.”

—Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, U.S. Army (Ret.) three-star general

“A gripping five-star read!”

—Bob Welch, award-winning journalist and author

7) Answers to Last Month’s Prayers
  • April 5-9, Barb and I were in Baton Rouge for the “World Premiere” of At First Light. See items above.
  • April 19 was the official release of At First Light. It quickly shot into the top-100 books on World War II on the Amazon best-sellers list
  • April 21-26, Barb and I returned to Baton Rouge to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our high school graduation (which was canceled in both 2020 and 2021). We had an absolutely delightful time visiting friends from so long ago.
8) Prayer Requests for Upcoming Events
  • May 11, Barb and I will celebrate with 17 other couples at the Recommitment Ceremony and Graduation of this semester of the ReEngage Marriage Ministry we co-direct at Academy Christian Church. One of the couples began the semester as a divorced couple that arrived in separate cars. They are now planning to be remarried. PTL!!!
  • May 30, Memorial Day, I’ll spend an hour on Chris Fabry Live on the Moody Radio Network discussing At First Light.
  • We’ll be home for an entire month – it’s the first time in a long time. I’ll be devoting some time to finishing the scrapbooks containing all of dad’s war letters and memorabilia.
