Efforts to vaccinate the U.S. population against COVID-19 prevented an estimated 17 million hospitalizations, more than 2.2 million deaths, and nearly $900 billion in health care costs.

These were the conclusions of a study by The Commonwealth Fund and Yale University.

The study covered the period from Dec. 12, 2020, when COVID vaccinations began until March 31, 2022.

“As Congress considers the costs and benefits of extending COVID-19 vaccination, our results show that continuing to vaccinate and boost Americans can produce substantial health benefits and financial returns to the country,” the study team wrote.
