April 9, 2022A new study is reporting that kids that are overweight or obese can get a signicant “brain boost” from exercise.
Medscape is reporting that a study published by preprint server MedRxiv found that exercise can positively affect
- intelligence,
- cognitive flexibility, and
- academic performance
in children aged 8-12 years who are overweight or have obesity.
This matters because “Emerging evidence suggests obesity might negatively impact cognition and brain development.”
The “ActiveBrains intervention” included three sessions per week of aerobic (60 minutes) and resistance (30 minutes) training over 20 weeks.
Compared to the control group that only “received lifestyle recommendations,” the kids who exercised improved academic performance, including in mathematics and problem-solving.
However, “This article is a preprint and has not been peer-reviewed [what does this mean?]. It reports new medical research that has yet to be evaluated and so should not be used to guide clinical practice.”
Nevertheless, because it correlates well with other research, I’ve presented it to you here. You can read the full report here.
