Why diabetics should drink coffee

If you or a loved one has diabetes, you likely know that diabetes dramatically increases one’s risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death.

However, there’s a surprising intervention to reduce that risk that diabetics may wish to consider every morning.

A recent analysis of ten prospective studies published in the journal Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases found people with type 2 diabetes that drink four cups of coffee per day had a reduced risk for

  • all-cause mortality,
  • cardiovascular disease mortality,
  • total cardiovascular disease events,
  • coronary heart disease mortality, and
  • coronary heart disease

at least when compared with those who didn’t drink coffee at all.

Although the study authors pointed out that more studies are needed that include coffee types, and the use of sugar, sweeteners, and creamer, as well as other factors, at least for now, if you have diabetes or pre-diabetes, adding a cup of antioxidant-packed java or up to four a day maybe a healthful addition to your diet.
