Heart attacks occurring in marijuana users

The American Heart Association warns, “There is no documented benefit of cannabis use for cardiovascular disease prevention or treatment. In addition, there is preliminary evidence that cannabis use may have a negative impact on the heart and blood vessels.” A recent study confirmed this by revealing that myocardial infarction, or heart attacks, are more frequently reported among young adults who recently used cannabis compared with those who did not use the substance.

We’ve known that heavy cannabis use has been reported to trigger acute myocardial infarction, however, this is the first study to show a risk in occasional users.

The researchers analyzed data from over 33,000 adults aged 18 to 44 years.

They found that a history of a heart attack was more frequent among recent cannabis users, especially those who said they used cannabis more than four times monthly and those whose primary method of cannabis use was smoking.

One of the researchers said, “As marijuana is becoming more accessible across the U.S., there is a need for rigorous research to better understand the effects of marijuana use on cardiovascular health.”

The study was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
