Parents: Watch out for dangerous social media challenges

There’s a dangerous new trend going viral to kids on social media called the “Milk Crate Challenge.” And it’s not the only one you need to be aware of. Experts warn the unsafe trends in social media challenges to kids, coupled with the overcrowding of U.S. emergency rooms due to COVID-19, could be a disaster waiting to happen.

One of these, “The Milk Crate Challenge” calls for stacking milk crates in the shape of a pyramid and successfully walking up one side and down the other.

It looks simple; however, the problem is that it can be very dangerous.

More and more ER and orthopedic doctors are reporting seeing significant orthopedic injuries as a result of falls from the milk crates, including broken wrists, shoulder dislocations, knee ACL and meniscus tears, as well as a number of children with life-threatening conditions like spinal cord injuries.

I’ve told you in the past of dangerous games promoted via social media. A young girl swallowed 15 magnetic beads while following a new “Fake Piercing Challenge” on TikTok and had to have part of her bowel surgically removed.

Another dangerous social media challenge called “The Choking Game” or “The Blackout Challenge” and involves children intentionally choking themselves to reach a euphoric state and left a 12-year-old in Colorado dead.

Parents, be wise to these challenges and be sure to talk to your kids about them.
