How to Treat Nosebleeds

People often ask how to stop nosebleeds. Here’s the latest from the experts at Prescriber’s Letter.

The good news is that most episodes can be self-managed.

When a nosebleed starts, sit upright, and lean forward to limit swallowing or aspirating blood.

Pinch the nose shut at the soft spot below the bridge for 10 to 15 minutes.

If that’s not enough, try 2 to 3 squirts of an OTC nasal spray containing oxymetazoline, like Afrin or Sinex, in the bleeding nostril and then repeat the initial steps.

Applying cold compresses to the nose may also constrict blood vessels.

Do not pack your nose with tissues, gauze, or tampons as these can cause rebleeding when removed.

And there’s no evidence of benefit for OTCs, such as BleedCease or styptic pencils.

If your nosebleed lasts longer than 30 minutes or the nosebleed is due to trauma, then head to your doctor’s office or the nearest urgent care.

Keep in mind, nosebleeds might be more common with high blood pressure, but a nosebleed alone is not an indication of hypertensive emergency.
