Studies find diet has significant effect on mental health

Medscape reported that “diet quality can have a significant effect on mental health outcomes and may potentially have a role in preventing and treating such common illnesses as depression and anxiety,” according to research published in the journal PLoS One.
In a study of 2,054 Australian teens whose dietary habits were assessed, researchers “found that higher healthy diet scores at baseline predicted higher (better) Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory scores at follow-up, whereas higher ‘unhealthy’ baseline scores predicted poorer mental health.”
In another study recently published in Psychosomatic Medicine, researchers found “a significant link between better-quality diets and improved mental health outcomes, and specifically depression and anxiety, in a cohort of Norwegian adult men and women.”
The bottom line is that improving your nutrition not only helps you become more highly healthy physically, but also mentally.
