As you may know from my previous blogs, millions of women looking to ease menopause symptoms turn to hormone replacement therapy (HRT)–also called hormone therapy (HT). Could it be that hormone therapy patches are safer than pills?According to a report from ABC World News, “Now, we’re learning that hormone patches may be safer than pills. Women who used estrogen patches had one-third fewer blood clots.”
The patches may be safer, according to a recent study, because “estrogen absorbed through the skin bypasses the liver, where blood clot proteins are formed.”
According to a report from the British researchers, “Oral oestrogen increases the risk of venous thromboembolism, especially during the first year of treatment. Transdermal oestrogen may be safer with respect to thrombotic risk. More data are required to investigate differences in risk across the wide variety of hormone regimens, especially the different types of progestogens.”
