FDA increasing scrutiny of sexual enhancement supplements

Walk into almost any convenience store or gas station and you’ll find pills that promise better sex. Some of these supplements that promise a libido boost have now been pulled from shelves nationwide after their manufacturers were cited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because the pills were laced with ingredients found in prescription drugs or their online ads made false claims.
The Palm Beach (FL) Post reports, “The FDA is increasing its scrutiny of sexual enhancement supplements after the agency found one-third of the pills it purchased online illegally contained prescription drug ingredients.”
In the last 17 months, the agency “issued warnings or helped recall pills from at least 16 companies … because they contained unapproved ingredients or the packages made claims about treating erection problems.”
Most of the issues dealt with “using sulfoaildenafil, or other regulated ingredients normally used in erectile dysfunction drugs.”
FDA medical team leader Mark Hirsch said the pills not only violated the law, but “could ‘interact in dangerous ways with drugs that a consumer already is taking.'”
