Life expectancy has fallen in hundreds of US counties

In my 2005 book, SuperSized Kids: How to protect your child from the obesity threat, I published this the then shocking statement, “If we don’t get a handle on (childhood obesity), this generation of kids coming up will have a shorter life span than their parents. That’s scandalous!” Now, we’re seeing some data indicating this unfortunate prediction may indeed be happening.
A new study reports that in hundreds of US counties – mostly in the South – life expectancy has fallen,” most likely due to smoking and, you guessed it, obesity.
The AP reports that, specifically, the study found that “in 158 counties, it dropped for both men and women,” despite the fact that “overall, life expectancy in the US is at an all-time high.”
Lifespan fell for women in 702 of some 3,100 US counties, while it declined for men in 251 counties.
I told you about another data set reporting this unfortunate trend in a recent blog of mine, “Obesity has cut three to four years from US life expectancy.”
So, what can you do?
