Family Update
It’s good to be home as we were only home 6 days out of a 30-day stretch over the last month. We’re thankful for the opportunity to travel and speak, but enjoy when we’re home.
I’ve been devoting a lot of my time to writing. I finally finished, and turned into ZonderKidz Guy Talk: A Christian physician answers your not-so-stupid questions about your body. I’m waiting to see if the publisher will accept the manuscript. If they do, the editing process begins. It’s a long process and the book will likely not be out until early next year.
Now, I’ve turned all my attention to a final push on my first solo novel, Hazel Creek. It is due to the publisher (Howard Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster) on March 14. I’m hopeful I’ll make the deadline.
Barb is completing her final edits and cuts, and I’ve been blessed to have ten dear friends, all of whom read lots of historical fiction, read the manuscript. They have made some wonderful suggestions, many of which I’m now putting into the manuscript. It will be, I think, a much better book because of their suggestions.
While I’m finishing the book, Barb will travel to Florida to spend time with girl friends and also take a “girls’ cruise” to celebrate the birthday of a dear friend.
Jack and I will try to hold down the fort.

The Gabon Virus still garnishing good reviews
Here’s a nice review of The Gabon Virus from An Unlikely Blessing by Judy Baer:
My Impressions:
The Gabon Virus by Paul McCusker and Walt Larrimore, MD, is the first book in their TSI (Time Scene Investigators) series. I began the series backwards — I read The Influenza Bomb first. It was so good I just had to go back and read the first novel. The GabonVirus did not disappoint, it was better!
A deadly strain of Ebola has been unleashed in the jungle of Gabon. Is it the result of an arrogant pharmaceutical company’s research gone amok, or is it just part of an eco-terrorist group’s agenda to rid the world of humans? A team made up of forensic pathologists, virologists, Interpol agents, and the US military must take on the crisis to find a cure before the virus reaches pandemic levels.
I was describing this book to my husband, who kept rolling his eyes. What, I demanded, was his problem? He said, how could anyone find a book about researchers suspenseful! Well, I did! McCusker and Larrimore combine great writing with actual medical research. The reader gets swept up in the urgency of the crisis as well as the detailed information about retrieving evidence from the present and the past. TSI refers to the fact that the group looks at historical epidemics in order to solve present-day outbreaks.
The TSI series combines fast paced action with great characterization. The research is impeccable, and the spiritual aspect is thought-provoking. Pick up The Gabon Virus and The Influenza Bomb. But get ready for some sleepless nights – because you just can’t put them down!
Highly Recommended.
Events of the last month
- Feb 2-6, we flew to Ft. Myers, FL, and then drove to Naples for the AMA’s RUC meeting. While we were there, on Feb 4, Barb had the privilege to speak at a luncheon at the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs on our book, “His Brain, Her Brain: How divinely designed differences can strengthen your marriage,” and she also did a book signing. It was, I am told, a great success—with over 250 women enjoying Barb’s talk.
- That evening, Barb and I spole at the evening Book Club of the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs. I’ll did a reading from “TSI: The Influenza Bomb,” my second novel and discussed my current and future writing projects. We then attended another book signing. We love the pastor and the people at First Pres Bonita Springs and our visits there are always a treat.
- Feb 6-10, we were in Atlanta visiting Scott, Jen, and their two girls. We had a fabulous time with them.
- Feb 10-13, we flew back to Florida for the wedding of a dear friend in Orlando. It was a blessed event for us and we were overjoyed to be with so many dear friends from our “Florida days.”
- Feb 17-20, Barb and I were in Scottsdale, AZ, where I spoke at an educational event for doctors on “Childhood Obesity.” Barb and I will also spoke together on “His Brain, Her Brain” at the same event. The presentation seemed well received, for which we were grateful.
Upcoming Events
- Mar 1-4, Barb will make a quick trip to Baton Rouge to be with her family.
- Mar 2-3, I’ll do a quick trip to Baltimore to attend a technical meeting at the Medicare offices—then I’ll be home the rest of the month!
- Mar 9-12, Barb will be visiting friends in Orlando.
- Mar 13-20, Barb will be on a cruise with some dear girl friends.
- Mar 21-24, Barb will be visiting friends in Kissimmee.
