Obesity associated with reduced sexual activity AND poorer health

Need a motivation for losing some more weight? Well, if you’re married, here’s a pretty good one. The Los Angeles Times “Booster Shots” blog reported, “It is well known that obesity raises one’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and certain types of cancer, among other health problems.” But now, a European study reports that “obese men and women have more health issues related to sex than people of normal weight.”
That conclusion is based on a survey of “more than 5,500 women and 4,600 men in France regarding sexual behavior,” according to the CNN “Paging Dr. Gupta” blog. “Of them, 411 women and 350 men were obese, as defined by a body mass index (BMI) of over 30.”
Investigators noted that “obesity was associated with erectile dysfunction in men.”
And, they noted “a trend toward decreasing sexual desire with increasing BMI,” as “obese women were less likely than normal weight women to say they had a sexual partner in the past 12 months, and obese men were less likely than their normal weight counterparts to have had more than one sexual partner in that time period.”
So, developing a strategy to lose those extra pounds may improve your sex life as well as your physical health. That’s what I would call a win-win for sure.
