Family Update

The winds of change are in the air. Nighttime temperatures are in the 50’s and the daytime highs in the 70’s. Our aspens are beginning to show some color and the squirrels are burying peanuts as fast as we put them out.

It’s a great time to get the yard ready for winter, to grill outside in the evenings, and enjoy dinner together on our outdoor deck. Wonderful.

Kate is well and still enjoys her work at the Focus on the Family bookstore. She was relieved and grateful to have her job survive the recent cutbacks there, although she grieves over good friends who have lost their jobs.

Scott and Jennifer tell us that young Sarah Elisabeth is growing and developing normally and moving rapidly toward her arrival in November. She has her Pop’s prayers most every morning.

Scott is enjoying his job as the lab manager of Jennifer’s lab at Emory. He can do his work while Jennifer is home with Anna Kate and vice versa. The extra income has been an answered prayer for them both.

Barb has the renovation bug. No sooner had she finished the renovation of our master bath, that she began our guest bath renovation. I’m hoping that job will be completed this week.

My part-time work at Oak Springs Family Medicine in Colorado Springs continues to go well. I work there a couple of days a week and, so far, it’s gone very well. The staff have been very gracious to orient me to the electronic medical record and their policies and procedures.

We’re seeing a few Swine flu cases. So far, the cases have been very mild – even milder than the seasonal flu.

I’m continuing my work on my first solo novel, tentatively called “Hazel Creek.” It’s a story of five sisters who have to care for one another after their parents tragically die in the Smoky Mountain wilderness of the 1920’s.

It is due to the publisher in December and should be out before Christmas 2010.

We hope all is well with you and yours.

Publication Update

  • Breaking News: 10 Essentials of Happy, Healthy People just released

This brand new book is an updated and a revised version of two of my first health books (10 Essentials of Highly Healthy People [which is out of print] and God’s Design for the Highly Healthy Person [a few remaining autographed copies can be found here).

You can order a copy of the brand new book here.

The back cover says:

One of America’s best known family physicians will help you (1) assess your health, (2) zero in on where your health is most out of balance, and (3) follow practical, achievable advice that will result in measurable improvements in your health and happiness.

In next month’s newsletter, I’ll have information on a free study guide to use with the book, as well as a link you can use for autographed copies.

  • TSI: The Gabon Virus, Initial Reviews Incredibly Positive

I can’t say enough about this book! The characters are well developed and their plight is both desperate and hopeful. The interlocking plot lines are blended seamlessly, and you will literally find yourself holding your breath as you read frantically…as desperate for answers as the characters in the story! TSI: The Gabon Virus has been one of my favorite reads all year so far! And joyful, joyful news . . . there is more to come!! There will be another release by this fantastic duo next year!

You want to be thrilled? Scared? Entertained? Encouraged? Spiritually challenged to explore your heart? TSI: The Gabon Virus has it all! Wonderful, frantic reading awaits you here!!

Though this is a big story taking place on three continents with a large cast of characters the authors do a good job of focusing on a couple of story-lines that are intensely personal and compelling . . . Throw into the mix, a village in England with a graveyard full of black-death victims from the 1600’s and a local legend named the Blue Monk, and you have the makings of a great story . . . The authors have revealed another in this series will appear in the near future following the exploits of the Time Scene Investigators to Siberia as they seek to thwart the madness of the Return to Earth eco-terrorists. That is good news. At least we can all sleep soundly until then.

Fast-paced, action packed, thrilling, those are just a few of the words that could be used to describe this novel. I had thought I would be bored when I picked up the book, but am happy to say that The Gabon Virus kept me on the edge of my seat.

Fascinating and compelling are two words I’d use to describe this book . . . the story is fast-paced, with enough suspense to keep you wondering if the TSI team will really stop the pandemic. The authors capture the race against time to find Aaron, the frightened young boy who is spreading disease wherever he goes, and that keeps the pages turning. This is not my usual genre of choice, but I was curious and I’m so glad I read it. An interesting and enthralling read. I look forward to more books about the Time Scene Investigators.

The action never stops in this fast-paced thriller that sends a cautionary message without preaching. Mindful of Hoffman’s Outbreak, the plot cleverly uses the real tragic history of the Ebola virus that killed several people in Gabon in 2001 and the seventeenth century Black Plague assault on the villagers of Eyam . . . The TSI team makes the science of disease epidemics especially viruses easy to understand but never dumbed down; that is the core of a super thriller that is timely with the Swine Flu outbreak.

At first when I started this book, the subject matter didn’t appeal to me … top secret … what if … viruses … Good thing I kept on, this sucked me in fast! I don’t want to give too much away, but the ideas in this story make you slightly nervous because the “what ifs” seem plausible. Great read.

  • His Brain, Her Brain continues to receive positive reviews

Here’s a review of His Brain, Her Brain: How divinely designed differences can strengthen your marrige, posted at Amazon.com:

MUST READ! You won’t be disappointed!

This is such an interesting and helpful book! My pre-marriage counselor bought it for my husband and I to read and discuss during our sessions. It was a great book and how the authors interlace science with real like experiences and biblical texts is masterful!

The book is witty yet poignant with MANY valid points! As my husband and I read it, we could relate to SO much and obtained a better understanding of why we do the things we do and think the way we do!

It also helps couples to pinpoint problems and their root causes that might not have been understood otherwise!

This is a MUST READ for couples, especially those about to embark om marriage and not to mention those who are already married, but need a refreshing perspective on things!
